Launch of a study for the management and recovery of industrial waste in Tangier

The General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises of Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima (CGEM TTA) and five associations representing the industrial zones of Tangier signed, Thursday in the city of Detroit, an agreement for the launch of a study for the management and recovery of industrial waste.

This agreement is signed between CGEM-TTA and five associations representing investors in the Tangier export processing zone, the Gzenaya industrial zone, and those of Mghogha and Al Majd, as well as the Tanger Automotive City free zone.

Speaking at a press conference held on this occasion, the president of the CGEM-TTA, Adil Rais, underlined that this convention, which is part of the efforts to improve the management of industrial waste , supervises the realization of a field study to analyze the quantity and quality of industrial waste and examine the means of their recovery and exploitation, noting that it will also make it possible to lay the foundations of a circular economy based on the recycling of this type of waste.

After noting that this initiative is unique at the national level, Mr. Rais indicated that this study, funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), an organization of the World Bank Group, will be launched next week and will be carried out by an international office specialized in a period of four months, noting that it “will give a clear idea of the quantity, the quality and the possibility of exploitation of industrial waste, which amounts to thousands of tons per year .

This study, he continued, comes at the initiative of the CGEM and was well received by all the associations representing the industrial zones of Tangier, in order to improve the management of industrial waste and reduce its cost, emphasizing it is expected that this study will make it possible to determine the manner of exploiting industrial waste and of making Tangier a model in the matter for the other cities.

Launch of a study For his part, the president of the Association of Investors of the Al Majd Industrial Zone, Hussein Ben Tayeb, assured that this initiative fills a major deficit in the management of waste from industrial zones located in urban areas of Tangier, noting that the cleaning sector management specifications do not include any chapter on industrial waste.

Once completed, the project will help solve the problem of industrial waste management, reduce the cost of its transport to the new landfill, create a circular economy, provide employment opportunities and enshrine sustainable development, said Mr. Ben Tayeb.

For their part, the presidents of a number of investor associations spoke of the added value of this study in terms of analysis and determination of the quality of industrial waste, and the possibility of their recycling at local level and their recovery, as raw materials in other industries.
