The Wali of Tangier receives Mr Serge Berdugo
The Wali of Tangier, Mr. Mohamed Mhidia, received on May 27, 2021, Mr. Serge Berdugo, Secretary General of the Council of Jewish Communities of Morocco and a delegation of the Committee of the Jewish Community of Tangier, composed of Mr. Aron Abikzer, Vice-President and Mrs. Sonia Zagury, in charge of Cultural Heritage.
This working session made it possible to review the various projects launched by the Jewish Community of Tangier.
In an introductory statement, Mr. Serge Berdugo told the Wali of his great satisfaction at the progress of the restoration project of the Assayag Synagogue in progress, as part of Phase II of the rehabilitation of Jewish heritage, approved by His Majesty the King may God assist him and the program to safeguard the Medina of Tangier.
This century-old place of worship being called in accordance with Royal directives to house the future Jewish Museum of Tangier, whose rehabilitation project was entrusted to the architect, Ms. Malika Laroussi and the museum realization to Ms. Isabelle Timsit.
Mr. Serge Berdugo recalled that the choice of this beautiful Synagogue, founded in 1890, in the “Siaghines” district facing Dar Niaba, responded to the concern of restoring this site and creating a museum to exhibit the artefacts, documents, photos. and Judaica of Tangier, that the CIT has saved and inventoried in order to integrate it into a relevant circuit allowing visitors to the city of the Straits to appreciate the heyday of Tangier Judaism: the Nahon synagogue, the Akiba synagogue, the museum Tangier Jew and the historic cemetery in Rue du Portugal.
The work launched by the “Dona et Haïm Benchimol” Foundation, the Israelite Community of Tangier and the Judeo-Moroccan Cultural Heritage Foundation, should last 10 months. The working visit carried out in the presence of the officials of the Wilaya of Tangier in particular Mr. Alami, Secretary of the Cabinet of the Wali, Mr. Massoudi, engineer of the Wilaya, Ms. Khadija Biari, Delegate of Urbanism in the Wilaya, Ms. Malika Laroussi, Architect, Ms. Sonia Zagury and Mr. Aron Abikzer from the CIT and all the building trades, provided an update on the progress of these important works (see photos) and to make the necessary and useful changes.
In addition, the Secretary General of the CCIM asked Mr. Le Wali to kindly convey to Our Sovereign the feelings of gratitude of all those originally from Tangier for the royal decision to restore their old Hebrew name to certain streets of their city.
The Secretary General informed the Wali of the decision of the CIT to put at the disposal of the Wilaya, the building of the “Cuna” the emblematic maternity hospital of the Israelite Community of Tangier, which will be rehabilitated according to standards to receive volunteers. the parturients of the city. This philanthropic project will be carried out in collaboration with Dr Abbadi and will include a school of Midwives and Specialized Nurses, headed by Dr Sedraoui.
Finally, all the authorizations being issued, he announced the upcoming opening of a Kosher restaurant within the Cercle de Tanger.
For his part, the Wali declared that the Israelite Community of Tangier had a rich history and a cultural heritage that it is important to preserve as a part of the common heritage of all Tangiers; He welcomed the collaboration with the committee of the Israelite Community of Tangier and expressed his satisfaction for the good progress of the projects undertaken by the committee, in particular the Jewish Museum and the “Maternity la Cuna” and congratulated himself on the opportunity to open a Kosher restaurant.
