Tourism: Nadia Fettah Alaoui takes stock in front of the deputies
78% fewer visitors in the first quarter
This lethargy impacted tourism revenues which fell by 69% compared to the same period of the year 2020, thus amounting to 5.3 billion dirhams.
430,000 tourists, such is the number of visitors who were welcomed in Morocco until the end of March. This flow is down by 78% compared to the same period of the previous year. A figure noted by Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Minister of Tourism, Crafts, Air Transport and Social Economy, during the weekly session devoted to oral questions in the House of Representatives.
In a speech read by Jamila El Moussali, Minister of Solidarity, Social Development, Equality and the Family, Ms. Fettah Alaoui, thus, drew up an inventory of the tourist situation at the national level and presented at the same time the action plan of his department for the implementation of sectoral recovery strategies. Indeed, tourism is one of the sectors most affected by the health crisis. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, activity has been virtually frozen. This resulted in a drop in aviation activity, which marked a drop of 70.16% at the end of 2020 and 73.90% compared to 2019. A trend which, according to the Minister, should persist until 2023 for a return to normal from 2024. This lethargy impacted tourism revenues which fell by 69% compared to the same period of the year 2020, thus amounting to 5.3 billion dirhams. To remedy this situation, the tourism department has set up a contractual program to support and revive the tourism sector.
The aim is to preserve jobs and the economic fabric by 2022, as well as to stimulate demand and create a structural transformation in the tourism sector.
Several measures have been put in place targeting classified tourist establishments, travel agencies, tourist restaurants, guides and tourist transport. In this sense, we can cite the payment of the fixed compensation of 2,000 dirhams to employees of tourist companies declared to the National Social Security Fund. The report drawn up in this direction shows that 5,518 tourist companies have filed their declarations to benefit their employees from this measure, thus affecting more than 79,000 people.
An electronic platform was also set up to allow free training in several sectors. In addition, there is the proposal for holiday vouchers, the relevant decree of which is in the process of being approved, as a mechanism offered by the employer to encourage internal tourism. The ministry is also looking into the development of in-depth studies and field research devoted to external and internal markets in parallel with promotional campaigns to prepare for the resumption of tourism activity. The minister also signaled that the immobilization of the Royal Air Maroc fleet could be maintained at 30% during the coming years knowing that the forecasts unveiled expect an exploitation of 40% of the traffic activity. air this year.
